2015 World Championships in Athletics
- The 15th World Championships in Athletics will be held in China’s capital city from 22 to 30 August 2015, at the famous Bird’s Nest Stadium at Beijing’s Olympic Park.
The event will be the biggest sporting event to take place at the Beijing National Stadium since the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
The World Championships in Athletics is an event organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Originally, it was planned to be held every four years, but this changed after the third edition in 1991, and it has since been run biennially.

The idea of having an Athletics World Championships was around well before the competition’s first event in 1983. In 1913, the IAAF decided that the Olympic Games would serve as the World Championships for athletics.
This was considered suitable for over 50 years until in the late 1960s the desire of many IAAF members to have their own World Championships began to grow. In 1976 at the IAAF Council Meeting in Puerto Rico an Athletics World Championships separate from the Olympic Games was approved. Located at the Olympic Green, the stadium cost US$428 million.
The design, which originated from the study of Chinese ceramics, implemented steel beams in order to hide supports for the retractable roof; giving the stadium the appearance of a bird’s nest. A shopping mall and a hotel are planned to be constructed to increase use of the stadium, which has had trouble attracting events, football and otherwise, after the Olympics.
Weather concerns prompted a reduction in capacity for the World Championships in Athletics; only the lower and middle tiers of the stadium will be open, capping the venue at around 54,000 spectators rather than its capacity of 80,000. However, seats in the top tier may be made avaliable if tickets are in high demand.
Good luck to all the participants!
